There’s always a lot of confusion between the difference between a Nutrition Health Coach, Nutritionist and Nutritional Therapist. Nutritionists and Nutritional Therapists are professionals that have studied nutrition in detail for three years. They can see patients in a clinical setting. What we mean by that is that when they see their patients on a one to one basis, they are assessing their symptoms. They are looking at the whole person and they’re trying to get to the root cause of the symptoms so that they can then use nutrition to help those people.
That is very different from a Nutrition Health Coach that would never look at symptoms. Nutrition Health Coaches will be giving guidance in the areas that they’ve been asked to guide in, or they might be giving a presentation or a cooking demonstration in how you could eat to support cardiovascular health for instance. However, they are never looking at a person’s symptoms. As a Nutrition Health Coach in the UK, you can work on a one to one basis but your client would have come to you and asked for nutritional support eg nutritional support for bone health, cardiovascular health, weight loss, energy, mental health etc. You’re not actually giving a consultation where you are looking at and assessing symptoms. You could have also had a client referred to you by a GP or by a Nutritionist who needs some help for that person to have meal plans and recipes prepared as well as general healthy eating guidance. Different rules do apply in different countries worldwide, for example in the USA it depends on what state you live in and your other qualifications as to what nutrition guidance you are able to give.
